Different Types of Metal Profiles and Which is Right for You

So, you know you want a metal roof, but now what? Whether you decided to make the switch because you wanted to be more energy-efficient, because you wanted a more durable roof option, or because you wanted a fire and weather-resistant material, you chose the right option.

Metal roofs offer all of that and more. They are durable, long-lasting, low maintenance, and come in a variety of style options that will match the look of your home.

With so many metal profiles to choose from, the options are endless! To help you with your metal roofing search, we’ve outlined some of these options below so you can choose what roof works best for you!

Standing Seam

One of the most common metal roof profiles is the standing seam system. This interlocks a series of panels that are connected by vertical legs.

Pros:

  • Standing seams have no exposed hardware because the panels snap together.
  • Because of their application, this profile can expand and contract as temperatures change.

Cons:

  • Due to the installation requiring more manual labor, this profile is more expensive than the fastener system.
  • Additionally, due to the high attention to detail that is needed with installation, this also takes longer to install than a simpler system, like the fastener style.

Fastener System

Many homeowners elect this option because it is the most cost-effective, simply consisting of overlapping panels that are directly fastened to the roof structure below. Hardware isn’t hidden instead it is just drilled into the roof on top of the metal.

Pros:

  • This style is the most affordable because it doesn’t involve “hiding” the hardware.
  • While the hardware is exposed, you can elect to paint it the same color as your roof to disguise them, while keeping this still affordable.

Cons:

  • If you select this profile, you’ll have exposed hardware on your roofing.
  • With the installation, careful consideration needs to be given to any holes because if water enters the roofing system, this can cause damage.

Metal Shingles

Suited for those homeowners who are looking for a metal roof profile that has a similar appearance to shingles, metal shingles are the perfect option for what they are looking for.

Pros:

  • This profile enhances a home's curb appeal because it resembles the common asphalt shingle look.
  • You still get all the same benefits of a metal roof, yet you have a lightweight, aesthetically pleasing style.

Cons:

  • This is more expensive than other options because shingles must be individually cut and fit.
  • Installation of metal shingles takes longer because they must be layered and tiled to all fit.

The metal profile that you choose comes down to your preference as it relates to style and insulation. The simplest style, the fastener system, comes with an exposed look, but higher insulation. The visually appealing shingle and standing seam profiles come with lower insulation but a sleeker design.

You’ll find that whatever profile you choose, you’ll save money on energy costs, have protection against harsh weather elements, have no replacement costs, get a higher return on investment, and get a great warranty if anything goes wrong (which will be rare!).
